DVD-R vs. DVD+R

by Gregory Constantine on Jul.08, 2009, under Technology

bulkdiscstackI’m trying to figure out why people even bother using DVD+R’s anymore. Am I missing something? Is it cheaper than DVD-R’s? I really don’t understand this. Why… Why use a product, a DVD+R mind you, when it fails almost every time! Most DVD players, whether its attached to your TV or built into your computer, rarely play DVD+R’s. They just spin and spin and spin, never ever loading. They’ll burn fine, but playback? No.

Anyone else having this problem? (Rhetorical question, don’t answer.) Use the standard people. Stop buying DVD+R’s and purchase a real, will work all the time DVD-R. I can’t stress enough how bad the DVD+R’s suck.

Here is a brief match-up of DVD-R vs. DVD+R:

1) The DVD-R media formats are officially approved by the standards group DVD Forum. The DVD Forum was founded by Mitsubishi, Sony, Hitachi, and Time Warner, so it has tremendous industry support for its technical standards.

2) DVD+R formats are not approved by the DVD Forum standards group.

So there you have it folks, DVD-R media is officially approved by the top manufacturers with tremendous industry support for its technical standards.

STAY AWAY FROM DVD+R! It’s evil!

Newegg vs. Everyone Else

Wondering where to get great deals on computer accessories or even other electronic paraphernalia? Then you want to hit up one of the best online stores ever, Newegg. I mean, they got everything from hard drives, to blue tooth headsets, all the way to the LCD TV.

This place is known for its low prices and extremely fast shipping if you are New England based. Number one rule for buying computer accessories? Never purchase from the actual seller: Apple, Dell, etc. They overcharge like crap. Why spend $200 bucks on a 640GB internal hard drive at Apple when you can just purchase the same exact model at Newegg for just under $60 bucks? Explain that to me. Most of the time, actually, every time I have purchased something from them its been no tax and free shipping. Can’t get any better than that. I even stay away from Best Buy too when it comes to this stuff.

Overall, check out the site. They always have great deals that come and go, then come back again. I’ve boughten a lot from them, even their LCD TVs have good deals here and there. I mean, come on, who wouldn’t want to show off their wedding in HD on one of those bad Larry’s?

So check out the site, it’s good stuff. www.newegg.com

Apple’s Architecture

Did you know that every 6-8 months Apple updates their products? Ever get upset purchasing an Apple product only for them to release newly updated ones the next week? Well, here are some personal tips on purchasing Apple products.

First off, most of the public just walk in the Apple Store not knowing when the next updates come out. Most don’t even ask, but then again, employees don’t even know, and probably won’t tell you since all they care about is the “sale.” So, here you will learn some fascinating tips on purchasing an Apple product.

Let’s see, how do I start this off? For one, first couple weeks of January, do not buy a product from Apple. They usually announce new products around MacWorld San Francisco. But now that Apple will not be taking part in this event, who knows if January will offer new products. Either way, still hold off in January for an announcement.

February to March is iffy. Usually there are minor speed bumps on Desktop computers. The MacMini, iMac, and MacPro recently saw upgrades in March. If you are new to the Mac family, the iMac is the way to go. MacPro’s are designed for us pros who need all the power they can get to turn around awesome edited wedding videos and such. If you want my opinion on certain products, give me a shout.

The MacBook, and MacBook Pro see their updates every 6 months with speed bumps and updated graphics and sometimes, price drops. You can see their updates falling in the months of March and September. September is usually a key update due to back to school promotions. They usually throw in a free ipod with your purchase. Oh, and did you know with every computer you purchase at the Apple Store, you get a free printer? Best printers ever too. If an update doesn’t happen in September, it will happen in October.

iPods always see their refreshes in September. So if its June, July, or August, do not buy an ipod. Please. Just wait, something better comes out around those months. Sometimes, they get a minor update in the Spring, but hold off til the Summer / end of Summer.

Try to watch out for the World Wide Developers Conference as well. This year, it’s June 8-12. You can surely see new products showing up there. iPhones, and possibly this is where the ipods will see their updates, but we’ll see.

So if you are reading this and want to purchase an Apple product, first do the research. There are many buyers guides out there on when the next updates are coming. Right now, it’s a GREAT time to purchase an iMac or MacMini.

Did I mention there is no such thing as a virus on a Mac? Been using them for 10 years and have never, ever gotten a virus, nor do I use any “anti-virus” software. My PC has seen well over 100 a month. I end with that.
